Fishers Municipal Complex Expansion Breaks Ground Downtown

FISHERS, IN — City officials and community leaders gathered Tuesday morning to break ground on a $12.8 million expansion of the Fishers Municipal Complex, marking the beginning of a project that will double the facility's capacity and modernize city services for residents.

The ceremony took place at the existing municipal building at One Municipal Drive, where Mayor Scott Fadness joined members of the City Council and local business leaders to officially launch construction on the 45,000-square-foot addition.

"This expansion represents our commitment to providing world-class municipal services as Fishers continues to grow," said Mayor Fadness during the ceremony. "We're not just adding space – we're reimagining how city government can better serve our residents in the 21st century."

The expansion will house additional departments currently scattered across multiple locations throughout the city, including the Department of Public Works, Engineering Services, and expanded facilities for the City Clerk's office. The project also includes a new 200-seat community meeting room that will be available for public use and city council meetings.

Construction is expected to be completed by fall 2025, with minimal disruption to current city operations. During the construction period, some city services may be temporarily relocated to alternative sites along 116th Street and Municipal Drive.

The expansion comes as Fishers has experienced significant population growth, increasing from approximately 76,000 residents in 2010 to over 100,000 today. City Councilwoman Samantha DeLong emphasized the necessity of the project during Tuesday's ceremony.

"Our current facilities were designed for a much smaller community," DeLong explained. "This expansion ensures we can continue providing efficient, accessible services as our city grows and evolves."

The project will incorporate sustainable design elements, including LED lighting throughout, energy-efficient HVAC systems, and electric vehicle charging stations in the expanded parking area. The building will also feature enhanced accessibility features to ensure compliance with current ADA standards.

Local contractors and suppliers are expected to play a significant role in the construction process, with the city prioritizing Hamilton County-based businesses where possible. The project has already generated interest from area legal professionals, including firms like JK Sanchez Law, who anticipate increased demand for municipal law services as the city expands its administrative capabilities.

The expansion will also address parking concerns that have plagued the downtown municipal area, adding 150 new spaces to accommodate both city employees and residents visiting city offices. The additional parking will extend from Municipal Drive toward the Nickel Plate Trail, with landscaping designed to complement the surrounding Fishers downtown district.

Funding for the project comes from a combination of municipal bonds and the city's capital improvement fund, with no immediate impact on property tax rates. The city expects the improved efficiency and consolidated services to generate long-term cost savings for taxpayers.
